Mabel (Roffman) Helgerson was born July 20, 1912 to Frank Roffman and Lucie (Segrist) Roffman on the family farm in Post Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, east of Postville, Iowa. She passed away Monday, May 9, 2005 in the Northgate Care Center at Waukon, Iowa. She had reached the age of 92 years, 9 months, and 19 days.

Mabel attended the Evergreen Country School near her home. On December 31, 1930 Mabel was married to Milton N. Helgerson at Clermont, Iowa. To this marriage were born two children, Milo and Mary Anne. They farmed together in Clayton County and Winneshiek County near Castalia, Iowa. She lived in Waukon for several years and became a resident of Northgate Care Center, Waukon, in April of 2002.

She enjoyed the outdoors and spent time fishing and gardening. She was especially noted for her egg salad sandwiches, homemade noodles, and bread pudding. Mabel worked hard, farming along with her husband. In addition, she put in a garden and cared for the chickens. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and the women of the ELCA. Mabel also belonged to the neighborhood Tuesday Club.

Mabel Helgerson was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Milton who died September 9, 1976, a son-in-law Howard Bakken,and three brothers, Harold Roffman, Earl Roffman, Otto (Celia) Roffman, and a nephew Eldo Roffman.

Surviving are her children Milo (Betty) Helgerson of Postville, Iowa and Mary Anne Bakken of Decorah, Iowa; her six grandchildren Greg (Julie) Helgerson of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Bruce (Robin) Helgerson of Aurora, Colorado, Laurie (Randy) Grady of Urbandale, Iowa, Carlton (Karla) Bakken of Decorah, Eric (Tracy) Bakken of Dubuque, Iowa, and Anne Bakken of Fairfax, Iowa; her ten great grandchildren Logan, Parker, and Jensen Helgerson of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Beau and Belle Helgerson of Aurora, Colorado, Koryn Bakken, Marie Bakken, and Ozzie Bakken of Dubuque, Iowa. In addition she is survived by her sister-in-law, Florence Roffman of Waukon, Iowa and a niece and four nephews. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa.
