MOST DISTRESSING ACCIDENT.

Geroge Harter Has His Leg Almost Completely Cut Off by Mowing Machine.

George Harter who lives with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Harter, on their farm in Section 5, Pleasant township, was the victim of a most distressing accident Monday last, when he was caught by a mowing machine and his left leg almost completely severed just above the ankle. It was in the afternoon, just after dinner, when he started for the field with a young team and a mowing machine. Coming to a gate he got off, without raising the sickle bar, and was opening the gate when the team became startled and started to run. He sprang for their heads but missed them, was thrown to the ground and the fast running knives caught him on the left leg just above the ankle, cutting and shattering both bones and leaving the foot hanging by only a shred of fles89 Dr. J. D. Hexom was summoned at once from Highlandville and finding it a very serious case telephoned to Decorah for help. Dr. M. D. Jewell responded. Upon examination it was found that while there was a bare possibility of saving the leg amputation was most probable and the young man would require the care of a hospital. They dressed the wounds and stopped the flow of blood, and on Tuesday George was taken to the hospital at La Crosse. Mr. and Mrs. Harter are in Europe enjoying a vacation and George was running the farm during their absence.
