Mary Ann Bottler was born in Baden Baden, Germany, May 5th, 1829. With her parents she came to America in 1834, and settled at Akron, Ohio. There she grew to young womanhood. About 1840, her father having died at Akron, the family moved to Decorah, Iowa. Oct. 7, 1857, she was married to Wm. B. Goocher, of Decorah. To them were born four children, Henry W. of Cresco; Geo. B. of Ladysmith, Wis., Mrs. Carrie Knox, of Cresco, and Alice who died at the age of three. In 1859 Mr. and Mrs. Goocher moved to Orleans twp. where they purchased a farm. Here they toiled amid the hardships of pioneer life, until they took rank among the leading farmers of Winneshiek county. They remained on the farm until the death of Mr. Goocher which occurred Jan. 27, 1897. During the past few years Mrs. Goocher made her home in Cresco with her daughter, Mrs. Knox. She departed this life Feb. 16, 1913. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. John Gammons, were held at the M. E. church Tuesday, at two o’clock. Burial was in Oak Lawn.
