Fatal Accident.
Cresco P D:—Saturday evening when the meat train from Kansas city came through to Ridgeway three young men got into an empty car to come to Cresco. That train don’t stop here and Albert Smestad, against the advice of his companions, attempted to get off and got under the wheels, one leg being crushed from the heel to above the knee, the car wheel evidently running from the heel to the knee, stripping the flesh clean from the bone. He was taken to the Globe Hotel and was attended by Drs. Scripture, Kessel and Daly. The subject rallied nicely and about four hours after the injury his leg was amputated by the attending physicians. About that time he commenced vomiting blood, showing that he also had internal injuries, and at about 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon he passed away. On the evening train his remains were conveyed to Ridgeway where his father resides. The deceased was 21 years old and unmarried.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in United Lutheran Cemetery and was born Dec. 27, 1877.
