OBlTUARY.
On December 20th, the reaper, Death took mother Catherine Butz (nee Eckstein) from her earthly home to the home of the Christian.
Mother Butz was one of the oldest members of the German Methodist congregation, west of Ridgeway. She was born Oct. 21, 1823, in Reckon, Baden, Germany, and in 1847 she was joined in holy wedlock to Theobald Butz, who preceded her to the better home about three years ago. They lived in Ripley Co., Indiana, till 1865, when they moved to Winnesheik county, Iowa, west of Ridgeway, where they lived till death. She was a real mother in Israel, her home always a welcome place for God’s servants. Having a clean Christian experience she loved God’s cause and people. Mother Butz was converted nearly fifty years ago and proved all along life that it is a blessed possession to be a child of God. Her husband and two daughters preceded her in death. Five sons and six daughters and about sixty grandchildren and great grandchildren with many friends mourn her departure, looking for a grand reunion in heaven.
Her funeral was held Saturday Rev A. Lamprecht, of Eldora, Iowa, who preached as the first German Methodist preacher in Mrs. Butz’s house, and had been assisting the pastor in revival meetings, assisted in the funeral services, he speaking in German and Rev. Schlung, the pastor, in English. Her remains were laid beside those of her husband near Ridgeway.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows her name spelled Kathrina and that she is buried in the Butz German Cemetery.

Grandma Butz died Thursday, Dec. 20, and was buried Saturday from the residence of her daughter Mrs. Kirshman, with whom she lived. The services were held in the Butz church. Thus another old resident has gone to the fast increasing majority in the land ”beyond the skies”. Five sons and six daughters, all married, are left to mourn her loss,

Transcriber’s Note: The Butz Cemetery records show this was Katherine who was born Oct. 21, 1823.
