MRS. W. G. W. SAWYER.
On Saturday last another of the pioneer settlers of Decorah passed into rest.
Martha C. Weaver was born in Pennsylvania, May 27th, 1827, and died at the home of her step-daughter, Mrs. E. J. Riley, on the 6th of October. She was married in Cleveland, Ohio, to W. G. W. Sawyer in 1853, and came to Decorah in November, 1855, thus making her residence here only a few weeks less than forty-five years. Only a few of the associates remain. There were six children as the fruit of this marriage, three of whom {with the father) survive her, viz. Mrs. Hattie Peckinpaugh, of Olive, Minn., Mrs. Allie Williams, of Decorah, and William Sawyer, of Seattle, Wash. For more than ten years she has been an invalid, and for the last year was confined to her bed; but she bore her illness with patience and endured her affliction without a murmur. Her membership in the Congregational church in this city dates from 1859, and during her active years she faithfully bore her share of church duties.
Funeral services were held from the residence of E. J. Riley, her pastor, Dr. Mahlon Willett, officiating.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone in Phelps Cemetery shows she died in 1899; however, that must be in error since this paper was dated in 1900.
