THE SILENT REAPER.
JAMES LACHIEL CAMERON
James Lachiel Cameron was born in Alvie, in the Highlands of Scotland, Sept. 10th, 1832, and died of paralysis at Hesper, Iowa. July l6th, 1900. Scarcely was it known in Decorah that he was ill when that intelligence was followed by news of his death.
Mr. Cameron came to America with his parents and two brothers, John and Robert, in 1832. They lived In Lockport, N. Y., for several years when they moved to Ontario, Canada, coming thence to Dane Co., Wis., in 1852, where he was a member of the first Republican club organized in Madison in 1856. Two years later Mr. Cameron came to Winnesheik Co., Iowa, and in 1859 was married to Miss Cynthia Tabor Worth, of Hesper They had seven children, four of whom died in childhood.
In 1861 he enlisted In Co. K, 38th Iowa Volunteers, serving through the War of the Rebellion. His wife enlisted later as hospital nurse at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., where Mr. Cameron was then stationed. Mrs. Cameron died in 1874.
In 1877 he married Mrs. Mary E. Johnson, widow of Lieutenant William Johnson, of the 38th Iowa. One son was born to them and he also died in childhood.
Since 1870 Mr. Cameron has served Winnesheik county about twenty-two years as county surveyor. He was always a strong defender of the right and his influence was always exerted toward the uplifting of his fellow men. He was an active worker in the cause of temperance, and labored with zeal in the enforcement of the prohibitory law. To him it was a Christian duty and a pleasure to help the weak, and with self-forgetfulness he worked for others. Charity for mankind was a principal characteristic of his life. His was a pure soul that made his fellow men better for having known.
For several years Mr. Cameron had been a member of the Friends church, in which the funeral services were held this morning, Rev. Dr. Slack officiating, assisted by Dr. Willett, of Decorah. His comrades of Col Hughes Post No. 168, G. A. R., were his escorts to his last resting place.
Mr. Cameron leaves a wife and three married daughters, (Genevieve M. C. Harper, of Thedford, Neb., Elsie L. Weber, of Hesper, Iowa, and Flora C. Hill, of Hesper, N. D., two sisters, Mrs. M. A. Widner, Sioux City, and Mrs. M. C. Carter, Hesper, Iowa,)— and one brother, K. Cameron, formerly of South Dakota.
