On Saturday morning last, January 18th, Miss Matilda Smith died at the home of her brother, W.H. Smith on East Water street, aged nearly eighty-one years. Miss Smith was a native of Yorkshire, England, where she was born April 27, 1832. With her parents she came to America in 1855 and direct to Winneshiek county. For a few years they lived in Canoe township and then moved to Bluffton township. After the death of her parents, Miss Smith made her home with her brother. She was one of a family of seven children of whom Mr. Smith is the sole survivor and the youngest. Nearly twelve years ago they came to Decorah and purchased the home where they have since resided. The funeral was held Monday morning at 11 o'clock at the home, Rev. Wellington McVettie officiating, and interment was made at the Russell cemetery in Canoe township. In the loneliness that has come to him in his advanced years, Mr. Smith will have the sympathy of many friends.
