Passing of a Pioneer (Decorah Republican, September 7, 1911)
Henry N Chappell was a resident of Hesper in the fifties and an active member of Friends church at Springwater in the sixties. Born in New York state, he grew to manhood in Ohio, where he married Matilda Benedict in 1845, and came to Hesper in 1854. Mrs. Chappell was a sister of Mrs. Ansel Rogers, Mrs. L.D. Blackmarr, Harvey and Albert A Benedict. Two of Mr. Chappell's sisters - Mrs. Abel Matteson and Mrs. Silas Rogers - were also of the pioneers of Winneshiek. After seven years in Dickinson county, Mr. Chappell moved his family to Battle Creek, Ida county where they celebrated their golden wedding in 1895 and where he passed away Aug 10, 1911, aged 86 years and 10 months. A good man was gone.
