OBITUARY.
On Friday, May 4th, 1900, a telegram was received by relatives in Hesper announcing the sudden death that morning of Bert K. Allen, son of Mrs. M. A. Widner, of Sioux City.
Although he had been very ill since the 1st of February his health seemed improving and he was planning a visit to Sioux City and to relatives in Hesper and Decorah, when during a slight relapse he passed peacefully away in sleep.
Bert K. Allen was born at Hesper, Iowa, Jan. 17th, 1869, and died in St. Louis, May 4th, 1900, of enlargement of the heart. His home was in Hesper and Decorah until he was thirteen, when he lived with Mr. and Mrs. Widner in South Dakota. He learned telegraphy at sixteen, and therefore was in railroad employ as telegrapher; and cashier in Sioux City until he entered the service of the Weare & Allison bank of that city, where he remained a number of years. He was married Dec. 4th, 1892, to Mrs. Tinie E. Kepner of Sioux City, and afterward removed to St. Louis, Mo., where at the time of his last illness he held a responsible position in the employ of the Missouri Pacific R’y Co. Very patriotic, he would have enlisted in the war with Spain had his health permitted. A loyal Scot, he was a member of Clan McKenzie, of Sioux City, and while there was also a tenor singer in the vested choir of the First Episcopal church. Bert was a frequent sufferer throughout his life from heart disease and from rheumatism, finding no permanent relief even through the Arkansas Hot Springs. But he was an energetic worker, with a hopeful, loving, sunshiny nature that made him popular with all who knew him.
The funeral services at Hesper on the 10th were conducted by Rev. William Cummings.
Mr. Allen leaves a wife and child, mother, one brother and many friends to mourn his loss, and now by his own wish is resting in the quiet cemetery of Hesper, “At Home.”
