THE SILENT REAPER.
John Wilson, for more than a quarter century Decorah’s nightwatch, died last Thursday and was burled Sunday morning in the Catholic cemetery, the funeral service being held at St. Benedict’s church. Mr. Wilson was born in County Cavan, Ireland, about seventy-seven years ago, and came to America when a lad of sixteen. At South Charleston, Madison county, Ohio, on Jan 15th, 1851, he was married to Bridget Mallon. To them nine children were born, one of whom,—Charles P.—died when a young man. The surviving children are Thomas and Mary Wilson, of Alexandria, S. D., Mrs. Nancy Doran, of Kansas City, James P. and John Wilson, of Chicago, Rose Wilson (otherwise known as Sister Mary Aloisius) of Manchester, Iowa, and Lizzie and Kate, of Decorah. All of these, except Thomas, who was detained at home, were present at the funeral.
Mr. Wilson came to Decorah in 1864 and soon after was appointed nightwatch of the city, a position which he held until 1893, when the city authorities decided that the position required a younger man. He was always faithful in his duties. He was not in robust health for a number of years, but only during the past five years did his afflictions assume serious form. During his declining years his daughter Lizzie remained at home and cared for him, and as a token of appreciation of her faithfulness the other members of the family have united in deeding the homestead, the only property left by the deceased, to her.
