The Late Mrs. C.P. Barker
Mrs. Mary Barker, whose death was chronicled in these columns two weeks ago, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Valle, pioneer settlers of Winneshiek county. She was born in Highland township on October 9th, 1869, and was the youngest child in a family of eleven children. Her early childhood and maidenhood was spent under the parental roof, with the exception of about two years when she lived with a sister in Deuel county, S.D. She was married to Charles Barker March 12, 1890, and their union was blessed by five children, four now living - two boys and two girls. She lived with her family upon different farms near Decorah until the death of her husband, which occurred in the summer of 1905, when she removed with her little family to Decorah.
Besides her husband and one child, her father, mother, one brother (Martin) and one sister (Betsey) have preceded her in death. Her death is indeed a sad affair to her orphaned children, who will now be thrown upon the mercies of this world without the protecting care of a father or a mother. A kind and loving mother is gone, and her gentle administrations to their every word will not be theirs any more. Together with her four children, she leaves the following brothers and sisters to mourn her loss: Mrs. Thovson of St. Olaf, Clayton county; Mrs. P.C. Peterson, Ole and Halvor Valle, all of Brandt, S.D.; Mrs. C.P. Peterson, Astoria, S.D. and Mrs Hans E Ness, Mrs. Tosten Iverson and her deaf and dumb sister, Sarah, who is unmarried, in Pleasant township. The brother, Ole and nephew, Martin T. Peterson, of Toronto, S.D. were present at the funeral, which took place at her old home in Pleasant township on Sunday, Feb. 14. Interment took place at the Russell cemetery in Canoe township. Rev. O.E. Schmidt of Decorah spoke the comforting words to the many relatives and friends who had gathered to do homage to her honor. Her relatives wish to express thanks to Rev. Schmidt and the many kind friends who so generously assisted in so many ways during her late illness.
