Death of Mrs. J. R. Slack.
At 3:45 o’clock this morning Mrs. John R. Slack passed away at her home in this city. She has been ill for some time with liver difficulty complicated with heart disease. At this time we are unable to give many of the particulars of her life. She was 63 years old and was married to John R. Slack in Decorah. Eight sons and a daughter survive her and all were present to administer what care and attention was possible during her last hours, and pay their tribute to a kind and loving mother. They were Mrs. Geo. H. Baker, John, James, Hutton, Raphael, Ed., Paul, Leonard and Samuel Slack.
The funeral will be held Sunday morning.Source: Decorah Republican Jan. 11, 1900 P 2 C 3
The funeral of Mrs. John R. Slack, whose death was briefly noted last week, was held at St. Benedict's Catholic church Sunday morning last, and she was laid away to rest in the Catholic cemetery, beside the remains of her husband from whom she bad been separated but one year and ten days. Thus passed away another of the pioneer mothers whose sphere was her home. She was a woman of quiet tastes, kind and affectionate disposition, and will be greatly missed by her children and those who knew her best.
Ann Maria Foley was born in LaPorte, Ind., April 5, 1835, and was the youngest of eleven children, only two of whom survive her. Her mother having died, she came west with her father during childhood, finally locating in Decorah in 1855, where she has since resided. She was married to John Rowe Slack, July 24th, 1858. From this union there were nine children, viz: John O., of Minneapolis: James S. of Ramona, S. D., Mrs. Catharine R. Baker, of Decorah; Dutton R., at present of Oakland, California, Raphael J., Paul F. Edward V., Leonard W., and Samuel R., of Decorah, Iowa, all of whom with nine grandchildren survive her.
