Monica Louise Luzum, the daughter of William and Leona (Schissel) Luzum, was born on June 28, 1936, on her parents' family farm west of Calmar. Monica was baptized, received First Holy Communion, and was confirmed at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, IA. She attended St. Aloysius Elementary Catholic School.

On August 13, 1957, Monica married Herman Steinlage. To this union, two daughters were born. On July 31, 1962, Herman was taken to his heavenly home by a tragic tractor accident. Monica was faced with the challenge of sustaining the farm and raising her daughters. Anthony Steinlage, Herman's brother, was the answer to Monica's prayers. Tony willingly came home from his military service duty to help, and together they worked side by side. On April 11, 1964, Monica and Anthony were united in marriage at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Festina. They were blessed with three sons.

Monica was a loving wife and mother who taught her children to be hard-working by example. Her huge gardens flourished, and her freezers and shelves were always full. Many Saturdays, the house smelled of fresh-baked bread. Holiday meals were sure to include kolaches, red banana jello, chocolate brownies, and her delicious apple pies.

In April of 1986, Monica entered the workforce by obtaining a position at CamCar where she worked until her retirement in February of 2001. After Monica retired, she and Tony spent their summers relaxing at their campsite on the Skip-a-way Campground and vacationing in the winter. Tony and Monica spent their time together fishing, attending Polka Dances, and traveling. In November of 2012, they became official snowbirds in Las Cruses, NM. On February 12, 2013, Monica endured a stroke. After a month of rehab in Las Cruses, she was transferred to Ossian Senior Hospice where she was a resident until her passing. Monica will be remembered for her quick wit, welcoming waves, and beautiful smile. The staff at OSH became her extended family and the care she received was remarkable.

Monica's greatest love was spending time with her family, and she welcomed each new member with open arms. She will always be remembered for her special "stocking stuffers" at Christmas. Monica was strong in her faith; she was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Parish, St Benedict's Parish, and the Catholic Daughters of America.
