Another Old Resident Gone.
Ezra Schoonmaker, of Ossian, who suffered a broken hip, wrist and right arm as the result of a ladder breaking under him while he was painting a windmill tower on July 30th, died last Friday, Aug 9th, and was buried Sunday.
Mr. Schoonmaker was born in Ulster Co., N Y., Jan. 28, 1848, and at the time of his death was 53 years, 6 months and 12 days of ago. In 1857 he came to Winnesheik county with his parents, and in November, 1869, was married to Miss Iola Webster. To them nine children were born, seven of whom with their mother survive him.
It was a natural characteristic for Mr. Schoonmaker to be cordial and hearty in his greetings and associations with mankind, and the unbounded hospitality he displayed toward all in the days of his prosperity will not soon be forgotten. He had many true and warm friends who had known him from boyhood and they cherish his memory. One who had known him intimately says of him.
If he had failings they are already forgotten,—his good and generous traits of character far outnumbered them. The large and sympathetic audience that followed him to his resting place in the Centennial cemetery on Sunday surely can testify to the place that he held in their hearts as a friend and valued citizen. The sermon by Rev. Platts, of Calmar, was short but impressive. The Masonic Service was beautiful. He is sleeping and at rest, but his untimely death will long be spoken of with sorrow.
