Killed By a Falling Plank.
Calmar Courier — Last Wednesday morning one of the men working at the elevated coal sheds at the roundhouse here, was killed by a heavy plank falling on him. He was up-ending some heavy planks and resting them against a structure, and there being a strong wind one plank was blown down. While the man was stooping down to pick it up another one was blown down and struck him on the side of the head, causing his death several hours later. The man had only been here since the first of the week and gave his name to the foreman as Wm. Lavalle. Some of his shirts and collars are marked C. W. W. Coroner Jewell was called and an inquest held, after which the body was taken in charge by undertaker Poshusta, and is being held awaiting the result of an effort to locate his relatives. Last evening J. J. Mashek went to look at the dead man and identified him as a man named C. W. Wicksome, who has off and on for the last three years been at Harmony, Minn. One of the identification marks was a deep indenture in his forehead between the eyes. This name also corresponded with the initials on the clothing. The Harmony liveryman telephoned that Wicksome has some horses at Harmony and that his parental home is Janesville, Wis.

On the 10th inst., one of the men—a stranger—working on the new elevated coal sheds was struck on the head by a falling plank and rendered unconscious. Several hours later he died without having regained consciousness. According to report, deceased had leaned a plank up against the posts of the shed and the wind blew the plank down with the result stated, as was returned by the coroner’s jury. It was ascertained that the man’s name was C. W. Wicksome and that his people resided at Janesville, Wis. These were notified by telegram and on the 13th a brother-in-law of the dead man arrived here from Janesville and identified the body, which had been left at the undertaker’s establishment, and took it to Janesville for interment.
