OBITUARY.
J. T. Shipley died at his home in this city on Sunday last. Had he lived another week he would have attained the good old age of 72 years. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1829. The years of his youth were spent in his native state and in Delaware, after which, when about twenty-one, he came to Wisconsin. Four years he spent in California, from which he returned to Wisconsin and lived at Boscobel until he came to this county upwards of a quarter of a century ago. After a brief residence at Locust he came to Decorah where he has lived for twenty-six years, a citizen highly respected for his general intelligence, moral worth and personal geniality. In 1858 he married Miss Mary A. Desmond and together they reared a family of three sons and five daughters, giving to each all the educational advantages our public schools offered. After their school days were over the sons—Jay, James and Thomas—found lucrative employment in New York city, the former becoming the eastern manager of the great law-book publishers of the country, the West Publishing Company, of St. Paul; and finally owner of the New York department. The daughters are Mrs. Emma Yager, of Calmer, Mrs. Josie Smith, of Spokane, Mrs. May Lloyd, of Coronado, Calif., Mrs. Mattie Findley, of St. Paul and Miss Bessie, living at home with her widowed mother.
For years Mr. Shipley held the position of overseer of the poor in Decorah township, and his service was always perfectly satisfactory to all concerned.
Funeral services were held at the family residence on River street yesterday afternoon. Dr. Willett officiating.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born June, 1829 and is buried in Phelps Cemetery.
