Charles E. Hathaway was born in Wheatville, N. Y., Feb. 20th, 1851. At the age of 12 years he removed with his parents to Waukon, Allamakee Co., Iowa. Like many other young men his desire to improve himself led him to one of the eastern states to gain the advantages they possessed at that time in educational matters. Returning west he entered the employ of the Freeport paper mill, where he remained nine years. His health falling, he left the mill and engaged in farming for several years. In the fall of 1884 he moved to Ridgeway, and became one of the business men of that place. On the 23d of March, 1883, he married Mrs. Kate Womeldorf, of Decorah. On Wednesday evening, April 3d, 1901, he was taken sick with pneumonia, and after great suffering for a little over one week he passed away at 3:15 o’clock, Friday morning, April 12th, 1901. He leaves a wife, son and daughter to mourn the loss of a dear husband and father.
This is the second time the sad messenger has visited this home, as seven years ago their little four-year-old Homer was taken from them.
May the God of the fatherless and widow comfort and sustain the bereaved family are the wishes and prayers of the friends of the stricken family.
Funeral services were held at the home, conducted by Revs. T. H. Hendricks and Kirk W. Robbins. The casket was placed in the family lot in the cemetery at Freeport.
