JACOB HAAS.
Not a few were startled this morning by news of the death of Jacob Haas. It was known that he had been seriously ill for some time, but it was thought he had passed the danger point, and was on the road to recovery. Poor health for several years from which he had rallied helped to allay immediate fears; but yesterday evening came a turn for the worse in which he quietly passed from the sleep of this life into that of eternal life.
Jacob Haas was born in Baden, July 16, 1834, and came to the United States in his twentieth year, arriving in New York on Dec. 1st, 1853. His first home was in Maryland, near Baltimore, where he learned the trade of blacksmith. Two years later he moved to Kentucky, and two years subsequently came to Iowa. In 1862 he enlisted with Capt. T. W. Burdick in Co. D, 6th Iowa cavalry, and served as farrier therein for two years and ten months, receiving an honorable discharge with the rank of corporal. Returning to Decorah after his enlistment he worked at his trade and securing land began his life as a farmer, which he followed until recently, except for a brief period from 1876 to 1880, when he operated a meat market that he sold to his son Charles. While living in Kentucky he married Margaret Rice, who survives him. To them were born eleven children, eight of whom are living, viz: five sons, Charles, Jacob, Henry, George and Julius, and three daughters, Mrs. Carrie Goocher, Mrs. Margaret LaGrange, of Colorado, and Mrs. Emma Pearson. Every one who knew the deceased will miss the hearty geniality and cordial friendliness which was a marked feature in the every-day life of the deceased. Though foreign born there was no more loyal citizen than Corporal Haas and where he gave his friendship no truer friend. Funeral services will be be{sic} held at the family home on Decorah avenue, in Park addition, tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. Rev. M. Willett will officiate.

Transcriber’s Note: Iowa Gravestone Photos show he is buried in Phelps Cemetery and that he died April 17, 1901.
