Last Thursday afternoon, shortly before two o'clock, Knut Johnson, an old resident of Decorah, committed suicide by shooting himself in the temple with a revolver. That the deed was a premeditated one there can be little doubt. At John Finn’s store he purchased a pistol, securing the cartridges to fit it at D. E. Reed’s store. He then went to the rear of the truck room on the first floor of the city hall and executed the deed which took his life. When found ho was dead, and no doubt had expired instantly. Charley Rima found him. County Coroner Jewell was called and held an inquest. K. I Haugen, D E Reed, and Knut Knutsen were impanelled as jurymen and their verdict was in accordance with the facts as stated above, deceased came to his death by his own hand. There was little testimony introduced which would indicate the cause for the act, but numerous stories are told which go to show that Mr. Johnson had been having trouble of a financial sort as well as other troubles and was feeling very despondent. In a way, his life has been one of exceedingly hard work. He had no regular occupation but did whatever came in his way in the way of employment. During the winter season that consisted mainly of wood-sawing, in the summer he was frequently employed by the city on the streets, and whatever was given him to do he performed faithfully. He leaves a wife and four children. The funeral was held last Saturday afternoon, Rev. Askevold officiating, and the remains were buried in the Lutheran cemetary.
