Death of a Former Winnesheiker.
The following obituary is from the Hedrick, Iowa, Journal and concerns C. H. Crawford, who was born at Frankville and was a brother of T. J. Crawford
C. H. Crawford, one of Hedrick’s prominent business men, who had been very ill for several weeks, died Friday morning, at his home, on Waugh and Third streets. The funeral was held yesterday, services being conducted at the home at 8:30 a. m ., by Revs. Scoles, of Hedrick, and Henness, of Montezuma. The remains were taken to Ottumwa on the 10 o’clock train, and services were held at the First M E church there, conducted by Dr. F. E. Brush. A large number of friends attended the services at Hedrick and Ottumwa, paying the last tribute of respect to a man who was universally esteemed. The pall bearers were S. C. Chacoy, W. W. Harris, Chas. Spicer, C. A. Beck, D. J. Van Nostrand, J. E. Foster, R. L. Scott and E. E. Phelps. Mr. Crawford was a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Knights of Pythias, Dramatic Order Knights of Korasson and Modern Woodmen of America. The members of the societies attended the funeral, but the services were not conducted according to the lodge rituals.
Charles Henry Crawford was born in Frankville, Iowa, February 18, 1861. Ho grew to manhood there, and afterward moved to Hartley, O’Brien county, where he taught in the public schools. He was elected to the office of county superintendent, and held the office three terms. He was editor of the Hartley Journal for one year. Later he moved to Ottumwa, and purchased the La Clede hotel, which he conducted for some time. Last spring he came to Hedrick, going into the grain business and continuing until his death.
Mr. Crawford was married to Miss Emma Thomas May 18, 1892, at Hartley, and who survives him. He was a member of the M. E. church, and was an active and zealous worker in all church affairs.
He was an upright, energetic business man, one whose loss is deeply felt by all with whom he came in contact. The wife, mother, and other relatives have the sincere sympathy of all in their deep affliction
