JOHN ASSELN DEAD
~
Well Known Pioneer Passed Away
Suddenly Yesterday Afternoon
~
Yesterday afternoon about four o’clock death claimed another of Decorah’s well known pioneers, Mr. John Asseln, who passed way at his home on the West Side, death being due to an attack of heart failure. He enjoyed good health until last February, when he began to fail, although he remained quite active until his death.

The deceased was born in Zetel, Germany, on August 16, 1835, and was the sixteenth John Asseln of former generations, born in that place. In the year 1864 he was untied in marriage to Gesche Margarethe Wedeken in Germany, and in 1867 they came to America and direct to Decorah where the family home has been ever since. Mr. Asseln was a well-known shoemaker here in the early days and was also a jobber in leather and bindings, and for some years operated a large shoe store in the building now occupied by L. R. Morrison. He retired from active business in 1893. During all the years of his residence here he was respected and esteemed by all who knew him, and his sterling worth was recognized by all. He was a man who was always found reliable and progressive in business. He was of the type of men who go to make up good citizens, and he was accorded that respect and veneration which is extended to those who have traveled thus far on the journey of life.

He is survived by the bereaved wife and five children, they are Emil, Harrisburg, Pa.; Dr. William, Salem, Oregon; Mrs. Henry Woldt, Route 6, Decorah; Mrs. H. F. Barthell, Decorah, and Theresa, living at home. One son died infancy and another son Gustave passed away in 1898 and a daughter Louise in 1902.

Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed at this writing, as it will take several days for some of the children to get home.
