Alice Treynor Murtha was born in Carrick, Macress Parish, County of Monaghan, Ireland, about 91 years ago and was married there in 1847 to James Murtha, from whence they came to this country during the following year. She now lies in St. Agnes Cemetery beside the husband who preceded her fifteen years ago. June 12, 1912, the end came, in the peace and comfort of a happy, Christian death, surrounded by all of her living children for some weeks previous to the end of her long and successful life. She was active and industrious as a home builder, and self-sacrificing, especially so in all of the difficulties attendant upon the early settlers of this section; coming by ox team and covered wagon in 1855 from Illinois and settling on government land in Section 12, Orleans Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. With her, the close and passing of all of the sturdy old settlers as heads of families is marked for all time. Long may the example set by her life be remembered.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone shows she was 89 years old. Also her gravestone shows she died June 11.
