Howard Nesheim, age 81, of Manly, IA (formerly of Decorah) passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2020, at his home and surrounded by his loved ones, in Manly, IA.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue in Decorah, IA, with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt presiding. Burial will be in the Springwater Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Howard Allan Nesheim was born on March 14, 1938, the son of Ludvig and Sigrid B.M. (Viste) Nesheim in Decorah, IA. He attended country school in Winneshiek County and graduated from Decorah High School. He was drafted by the Army on September 21, 1961, and was stationed in Germany until September 23, 1963. When he returned home, he worked for DHIA as a milk tester in Delaware County. While everyone thought Howard would be a bachelor forever, he fell in love and married Daune Dettbarn on May 28, 1969, in Galena, Illinois. Together they had three daughters: Glenda, Brenda and Rhonda. In 1970 they made their home together in Decorah, with Howard working for Brynsaas Sales and Service while also dairy farming with Daune and his girls.

Howard worked hard but he also knew how to have fun. In the ‘70’s Howard participated in competitive target shooting, taking home many trophies including the Tri-State Rimfire Championship. He enjoyed woodworking and created many beautiful pieces of furniture still being enjoyed today by family members. In his later years, Howard took to restoring 2 cylinder John Deere tractors, and he was known throughout the area for his expertise in coaxing old tractors back to life.

Howard is survived by his wife Daune. Children: Glenda Nesheim, Minnesota Lake, MN; Brenda (Tim) Nesheim-Fuller, Manly, IA and Rhonda (Terry) Nesheim-Kauffman, Manly, IA. Grandchildren: Arif, Yasimen, Katie, Alan, Logan and Luke.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Ludvig and Sigrid B.M. (Viste) Nesheim, and his brothers: Walter, Kenneth and Roy Nesheim.
