MONRAD.
Ragnar Julius Monrad was born Feb. 13, 1854, in Norway, and was the son of M. J. Monrad, professor of philosophy at the Christiania University. Here the younger Monrad received the most of his education. Although he chose philology as the branch he desired to teach, he had Prof. S. B. Bugge, the most noted Latin scholar of Norway, for a private tutor and under him became an exceptionally fine scholar in this language. In 1883 he came to America upon the call of Prof. Larson and for five years was a member of the faculty of Luther College. Going back to Norway, he remained but a short time and the year following, 1889, returned to Decorah and for a short time was on the editorial staff of the Decorah-Posten. In the same year he went to Chicago and for ten years held a position, most of the time as city editor, on the Skandinaren. In 1899 he again returned to the Posten staff where he continued to work until last fall, when failing health compelled him to relinquish his duties. In the spring of this year he became so afflicted mentally that he had to be taken to Independence to the state hospital, where he died last Saturday. He was married in 1883, and two daughters, now living in Norway, survive him. His wife died in March, 1900. Very few men who resided in Decorah enjoyed finer literary attainments than Prof. Monrad. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon and the remains were buried in the Lutheran cemetery beside those of his wife.
