OBITUARIES.
JAMES STRINGER died in this city on the 4th inst., in his 68th year.
Deceased was born in Sherrington, Canada East, on the 7th of May, 1834, and resided there until coming to Iowa in 1856, Oct 10th of that year he arrived in Decorah, and entered the employ of Ammon, Morgan & Merrill in the wood-working department—he having learned the trade of millwright in early life. Here he has lived ever since, and during most of the years, until Ammon, Scott & Co. retired from business, he remained with the firm in all its varying changes, a trusted helper. In August of the following year he married Miss Sarah Greer, a sister of John Greer, of this city, who survives him. One son, Geo. L. Stringer, was born to them. Four brothers, out of a family of seven sons and two daughters, also survive him. These are Richard, a resident of Chicago. Mark, living in Wayne, Neb., and John and Robert, both remaining near the old home in Canada east, now Province of Quebec.
The illness of Mr. S. began about three years ago. The symptoms for a long time were obscure, as is frequently the case in organic diseases, and only during the last year did they conclusively point to what a post mortem examination disclosed, viz cancer of the bladder. Not until some six weeks ago was his condition such as to confine him to his bed. Consciousness he retained to the last, and through it all he was a patient sufferer,
Many years ago, under the ministrations of Rev. G. W. Brindell, if memory is correct he united with the Methodist church, and has been for many years an official member. He was also a member of Winnesheik{sp} Lodge, I. O. O. F., and in politics an earnest Republican. His life was that of a quiet, unostentatious citizen, holding peaceful relations with his fellow men, and with strict fidelity and uprightness performing all the duties of a husband, father and citizen.
Funeral services were held at the family residence on Main street. Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Kirk W. Robbins officiating.
Messrs. John Stoskopf, C B. Lennon, L. J Anderson, Geo, H, Baker, J. A. McCusker and Jacob Ammer served as pall bearers.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Phelps Cemetery shows the year of his birth as 1835.
