Another Pioneer Passes,
Mary Elizabeth Smalley, daughter of Edward and Susanna Smalley, was born in Illinois March 9th, 1844. Her parents moved to near Ashland, Ohio while she was still young, and there her childhood days were spent. Her parents moved west in the early fifties, and settled in northern Missouri, making the trip there with wagons. From there they soon moved to Iowa, and settled in Fayette Co., and later to Winneshiek Co., and settled on a claim east of Decorah where her mother died, her father subsequently removing with the family to Boone, Iowa.
At the age of nineteen she was married to Hosea Ballon Bullard of Ossian, and nine children were born to them, eight of whom are now living, five sons and three daughters.
Left a widow in early life, with a family of children, her noble heart and ready hands and quick brain planned wisely for their schooling and welfare. During her last illness, while she suffered from tumor of the face, her noble example of patient submission to God’s will inspired all who saw her, and all that loving hands and hearts could do was done.
She died at McGregor on the 26th of December, 1903, aged 59 years, 9 months and 17 days, and was interred beside her husband at Ossian.
She was a kind and loving mother, a loyal friend and an honest citizen,Transcriber’s Note: Iowa Gravestone photos shows she is buried in Hillside Cemetery.
