PETER RONEY.
Peter Roney died at his home in this city Monday afternoon at five o’clock from a complication of diseases after an illness covering several years. Mr. Roney was born in Essex county, New York, May 15, 1841, and came to Decorah in 1855. He first engaged as a laborer on the farm near Trout Run that be subsequently bought and where he made his home until physical disability compelled the abandonment of hard labor. This farm he managed successfully for a quarter of a century. During this time he also owned the Trout Run flour mill, a purchase which proved disastrous in his case as did the milling business to scores of others who were engaged in it when wheat growing failed in northern Iowa. He was married July 20, 1866 to Almira L. Gibbs to whom eight sons and three daughters were born. Of these all but one son survive. They are Mrs. J. J. Cameron of Stevensville, Mont., Chas. Roney, Eureka, S. D., Mrs. L. D. Miller, Albert, William and John Roney of Sioux Falls, Frank, who resides in Madison township, Ray, Roy, Mabel and Jay at home. Five years ago Mr. Roney became afflicted with cancer and from this and consumption be was a great sufferer but endured his affliction with much patience and great hope that he would ultimately recover. During it all he has had all the care that a loving wife and family could bestow. Thus another of the oldest residents of the county has passed away, one who enjoyed a wide acquaintance throughout the community. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, Rev K. W. Robbins officiating, assisted by Rev. E. G. Hunt.
