John McMartin died at his home Saturday morning, August 8. Mr. McMartin had been in feeble health for a long time, but his death came as a surprise as he did not appear to be particularly worse the day wore he died. On going to his bedroom to call him as usual it was found that life was extinct. He was one of the old pioneers of this township as he settled on a farm two miles northeast of here where he resided until a few years ago, when he sold out and moved to Castalia where he has since resided. Mr. McMartin led a quiet and unassuming life and had the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He was born September 20, 1827, at St. Andrews, Province of Quebec, Canada. He moved to Wisconsin in 1849 and from there to Iowa in 1851. He was married to Julia Ann Grandy in 1855. In 1862 his wife died. In 1865 he married Frances N. Stiles. As a result of this union two children were born, Myrta E. and Chester S., both of whom survive their father. The funeral was held from the U. B. church Sunday, August 9, at 2 o'clock p. m., Rev. Ross officiating. The church was packed to the door and many were unable to gain admittance. Thus another of the old settlers has passed away. The older ones are yearly growing less and a younger generation is filling their places.

Transcriber’s note: Iowa Gravestone Photos show he is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery.
