Dale Otteson, age 83 of Decorah, IA, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2019, at Gundersen Health System in LaCrosse, WI.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah. Burial will be in the Freeport Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 9:30am at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah on Thursday morning.

Dale was born on January 16, 1936 in Decorah to Orrie and Helen (Overacker) Otteson. He was baptized and confirmed at First United Methodist Church in Decorah. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1955. He enlisted in the Air Force 1955 as a jet engine technician. While stationed at Ft McDill AF base, he enjoyed riding his 55 Harley Davidson. After the AF, he graduated from Hamburger University and worked for McDonalds Corporation for many years. He later returned to Decorah and worked at Carlson Construction until retirement.

Dale was united in marriage to Evelyn Gold on Aug 14, 1958.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping with his friends. Growing up, he worked on farms and the Neih bottling company. He was a great story teller about growing up in Decorah, talking about the history of Decorah that we never learned from books. While retired, he would fish every day the he could at the trout stream by the hatchery. If he saw someone having troubles catching anything, he would always share his catch. He was famous for his fudge that he made every Holiday and the porcelain dolls he made.

Dale is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn. Three children: Donna (Frank) O’Neill, Waukon,IA; Edward Otteson, Pearl, MS and Jerry (Cathy) Otteson, Sun Prairie, WI. One sister: Mavis (Darrell) Mitchell. Eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Orrie and Helen (Overacker) Otteson and sister, Esther (Wilbur) Houck.
