DEATH FROM DROWNING.
Leo Hohe Loses His Life in the River Monday Afternoon.
Monday afternoon Leo Hohe, an employee of B. Schulte & Son, who have the stone cutting contract on the new court house, was drowned in the Upper Iowa river at a point near the ice cave. Hohe, in company with Thomas Jones and John Keeley, fellow-workmen, went in bathing at the island, above the Ice Cave Mill dam. Jones and Keeley had remained in the water as long as they cared to and came out to dress, leaving Hohe on the opposite side of the island. When they last saw him he was in the water seemingly enjoying his bath most thoroughly. After dressing and waiting for a few moments, they became alarmed at his non-appearance and an alarm was spread. Grappling hooks were secured and an attempt was made to find his body, but they were unsuccessful, although the search was continued until dusk. Tuesday morning Sheriff Mizener secured a boat and with several men and grappling hooks began a more systematic dredging of the river bottom. The boat was pulled back and forth across the river until well along in the afternoon when one of the hooks caught in the dead man’s arm and he was pulled to the surface. When he was taken out of the water his arms and legs were drawn up in a position that indicated that he had been taken with a cramp. The accident could not have occurred otherwise as he was an excellent swimmer. The deceased was a German by birth and resided at 683 West 15th St., Chicago. Where the body was found was about 60 feet east of the point of the island. Two brothers of the dead man, one from Chicago and one from Wisconsin, came yesterday to claim the remains and remove them to Chicago for burial.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Saint Boniface Cemetery in Chicago, IL, and also that he was born January 19, 1870 and died June 8, 1903.
