The Passing of Another Pioneer Mother.
Delia A. Morgan, daughter of Solomon and Amy Morgan, was born in Addison county, Vermont, December 29th, 1811, and died at her home in Hesper, Iowa, June 7th, 1903, aged ninety-one years, five months and eight days. She was married to Thos. N. Wilson at Ferrisburg, Vermont, April 8th, 1829, and for about sixty-three years they shared together life’s joys and sorrows, Nine children were born to them, three dying in infancy, and one, Polly A. Power, passed on in 1861. The children who survive her are Mrs. E. A. Maydole, of Sisseton, S. D., Norris P. Wilson, Hesper, Mrs. Amy W. Sherman, of Santa Maria, Cal., Mrs. J. M. Power and Mrs. M. Oren, of Hesper.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson lived several years in Vermont, Canada and New York. In 1854, they came to Iowa, living in Jackson county, two years. They came to Hesper on July 3d, 1856, where they have since resided. She commenced her Christian life and membership in the M. E. church at the age of sixteen years, and although not an active member of the church, owing to her many cares and responsibilities that ever surrounded her until late years, she has ever lived an earnest Christian life. She was stricken with paralysis at about 5 p. m., on the 2d inst. While being gotten onto her bed, about an hour after being stricken, she expressed a desire to pray, and during that night and again during the following night, she was heard to say : “I want to go where Jesus is.” Although apparently unconsious of all earthly surroundings, she was conscious of the fact that she wanted to be with Him who had been an unfailing friend for about four score years.
The funeral services were held in the Friends church, on the 9th, her pastor, Rev, H. F. Dorcas, in charge, assisted by Dr. Slack, of the Friends church. Among those in the large company who had met to pay their last tribute of respect were several who had known Mrs. Wilson all of her life in Hesper. We can sympathize with those who have lost the presence of a dear mother, but we cannot mourn that she has been gathered as a sheaf that was fully ripe and waiting for the harvest.
