Death of Michael Steyer.
At an early hour Tuesday evening Michael Steyer, the stone cutter and marble dealer, passed away at his home in this city after an illness of several weeks. While it was known that he was in poor health it was not considered that he was dangerously ill and his death came as a surprise to almost all who knew him. Alexander’s history of Winneshiek county says Mr. Steyer was born in Germany in 1838 where he learned his trade as a stone and marble cutter, working also in Belgium and France. In 1867 he came to America on a visit and decided to remain, continuing to reside in Decorah ever since. His wife was Miss Celia Lamm and they wore married Jan. 2, 1868. She with several children survive.Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in St. Benedict Cemetery shows he was born May 1, 1838 and died April 21, 1903.
