The remains of Mr. Mathias Mashek who died at Pocahontas, Iowa, were brought to Spillville and interred in the Catholic cemetery last Friday. The deceased was born in Bohemia, Europe, Feb. 13th, 1810 and died March 23d., at Pocahontas, Iowa, at the home of his daughter; Mrs. F. J. Payer. He was married in 1831 and came to the United States in the beginning of 1852, residing in Cleveland, Ohio, until 1854. From there they removed to Galena, Ill., where the family spent about nine months. In the spring of 1855 he came to Winneshiek county and settled on a farm two miles west of Calmer. In 1870 he left the farm for his sons to work and removed to this city, where he has resided ever since. A little over a year ago he went to visit his daughter at Pocahontas, where he passed away. His wife died here about 15 yours ago. The union was blessed with twelve children, eight of whom survive him, as follows: — Wenzel: Jos. G.; Mrs. W. Sobolik, Mrs. .Geo. Huber: Mrs. John Macal, (all residing in this county,) and M. A. Mashek of Able, Neb; Mrs. F. J. Payer of Pocahontas, Iowa, and Mrs. L. Ball of St. Paul, Minn. The funeral was attended by a large number of friends and relatives of the deceased.

Transcriber’s Note: St. Wenceslaus Cemetery shows his name as Matej Masek. It shows the above date of birth but shows the date of death as April 30 which must be an error or incorrect translation.
