The death of John Failey occurred on Friday morning last. Although has long been in feeble health it was a great surprise to the town to hear of his death. For more than thirty years Mr. Failev has been a resident of Burr Oak but the trembling old frame is at rest. He was born in Ogdensburg, N. Y., April 28, 1829, and was married to Marie Carey May 15, 1870. Eight children were born to them, and all but one daughter, who resides in Idaho, were present at the funeral. On September 21, 1861, Mr. Failev enlisted from Windsor, Vermont, and was mustered into the United States service at Burlington, Vt., as private in Co. E, 1st Regiment, Vermont Volunteer. Cavalry. Nov. 19, 186l, under Capt. S. R. Rundlett and Col. G. B. Kellogg to serve three years or during the war. The regiment was assigned to the army of the Shanandoah and participated in the following engagements: McSackeysvllle, Va., April 27, 1862; Middletown, May 24, where Mr. Failey was captured with Major Collins and recaptured the same day; Winchester, May 25. where he had a horse shot from under him; Surray Courthouse, June 30; Culpepper Courthouse, July 10; Orange Courthouse, Aug. 2; Kelley’s Ford, Aug. 20: Waterloo Bridge, Aug 22; Second Bull Run, Aug. 30; Mount Jackson, Sept. 16, Ashley’s Gap, Sept. 22; where he was wounded so seriously that he was confined for a month in the Wolf Street Hospital at Alexandria. Oct. 23, 1862, he was at Ft. Scott, Va., where he was honorably discharged on account of disability. Mr. Failey was buried on Sunday from the Advent church, Rev Dick preaching the funeral discourse. The bearers were fellow soldiers, namely, C. O. Maltbv, L. W Bennet, Ezra Weldon, Walter Case, C. Wayne Donaldson and A. H. Gates.
The wife and children desire to extend heartfelt thanks to their friends and neighbors for the many kindnesses and sympathy extended them in their bereavement.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Burr Oak Cemetery shows he was born in 1830.
