OBITUARY.
Peter L. Wennes died In Highland township on Dec. 15 and was buried Dec. 20th. He was born in Throndbjoms, Norway, June 11, 1819, and came to America in 1850. He first stopped near Milwaukee where he resided four years. In 1852 he was followed to this country by Miss Tarine Gjerstad and upon her arrival they were married. In 1854 they came to Winneshiek Co. and located on the land where their son O. L. Wennes now resides, and which was their home during the remainder of their lives. Three children were born to them, the oldest dying in infancy. The other surviving child is Mrs. Ellen J. Halseth residing in Hesper township. Mrs. Wennes died last year. In religious faith Mr. Wennes was a strong supporter of the Synod Lutheran church and in his political affiliations he was an earnest Republican.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Highland Lutheran Cemetery shows his first name spelled Peder.

Highland Township Pioneer Dies.
After an illness extending over some time, Peter Wennes, one of the pioneers of Highland township, died at the home of his son, Supervisor Wennes, on Monday. We have none of the data concerning Mr. Wennes’ life, therefore are not able this week to give an extended obituary. He was known among his neighbors as a man of high character and strict integrity.
