Delores J. Rovang, age 90, of Decorah, IA, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, August 25, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society in West Union, IA.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with Rev. Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Burial will be in Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday, one hour before the service, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.

Delores Janan Rovang was born on October 23, 1928 to Rudie and Alice (Hovden) Hovden in Decorah, Iowa. Delores grew up on a farm near the Madison Lutheran Church where she attended Sunday school and church. She attended high school in Decorah where she stayed with a family in town during the school week which was common in those days. After graduating from high school in 1947 Delores worked at the Winneshiek County Court House.

Delores loved music and dancing and at a dance she met Rueben Rovang. They were united in marriage on October 8, 1950 at the Madison Lutheran Church near Ridgeway, Iowa. To this union four children were born: Rodney, Doreen, Randy and Gene.

Delores helped Reuben farm near Nordness by driving tractors and doing chores. As the children grew up, she worked as bookkeeper for the Nordness Creamery and later at RSVP in Decorah, working with senior citizens in various activities including quilting.

Along with her many dear friends from Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, Delores was a staple at church functions for many decades. They too, were part of the “Greatest Generation.”

Reuben and Delores would enjoy neighborhood gatherings where families would get together to talk, play cards and the kids would have fun. They would also continue their enjoyment of music and dancing. Delores greatly enjoyed having the family gather for holiday and birthdays which were among her happiest times. After retiring from farming Rueben and Delores lived on the farm for many years, enjoying walking in the woods and along the stream there. They would also walk to their neighbors to visit and for exercise. In 2004 they moved to Decorah.

She was preceded in death by her parents Rudie and Alice Hovden; her husband Reuben Rovang on November 16, 2004; and her daughter Doreen Rovang on June 23, 2019.

Delores is survived by three children, Rodney Rovang of Marquette, IA, Randy Rovang of West Union, IA., Gene (Jennifer) Rovang of Iowa City, IA; six grandchildren: Nicole, Travis and Hailey of West Union; and Jon, Alexia and William of Iowa City; one great-granddaughter Presley of West Union; one sister, Audrey (John) Dahle of Decorah; one brother, Alton Hovden of West Union; one sister-in-law, Marion (Bill) Rude of Decorah; and several nieces and nephews.
