Mrs. John W. Stiles, one of the pioneer mothers of Decorah, passed away at her home at the Stiles hotel on Friday evening, after an extended illness.
Sarah E. Flemming was born July 18, 1842, at Rutland, Vermont, and came to Decorah in 1856, having lived here ever since. She was united in marriage to John W. Stiles, February 18, 1855, to whom two sons and seven daughters were born. One son died in infancy. She is survived by one son. Charles of Cherokee, Iowa, and seven daughters, Mrs. Oscar Bondy, of New York City, Mrs. Phil. Schildknecht of Dubuque, Iowa, Ruth of McGregor, Iowa, Mrs. Norton and Mrs. E. R. Haines, Mrs. E. W. Spurr and Miss Lizzie of Decorah. The funeral services were held on Monday morning, from St. Benedict’s Catholic church, Rev. Fr. Hawe officiating, attended by a large number of friends gained during her long residence here. Mrs. Stiles during her long career as landlady at the Stiles Hotel was well known by the citizens of this city and vicinity, and by the many who through the years have been patrons of the hotel. She was a lady of admirable character, a good friend and neighbor whose life was devoted to her family, and the regret of her demise is general. Another good mother has passed beyond. --Decorah Public Opinion.

Transcriber's Note: Find a Grave shows she is buried in Phelps Cemetery and her maiden name spelled Fleming.
