Eunice Denk, age 78 of Decorah, IA, died on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at Gundersen Health Systems in LaCrosse, WI.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 12:00 p.m., on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at the St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah and also after 11:00 a.m. at the Church on Wednesday morning.

Eunice Ann (Westby) Denk was born on January 1, 1941 the daughter of Carl and Rachel (Nash) Westby in Waukon, IA. She was baptized on January 26, 1941 and confirmed on June 5, 1955 at the Glenwood Lutheran Church. Eunice was raised on a farm in Glenwood Twp and attended Rocksvold Country School. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1958. After graduation, Eunice worked for North Western Bell as an operator. She married Jack Schissel Jr. on November 7, 1959 and to this union a son was born: Randy Schissel. They farmed together near Ridgeway until Jack passed away due to cancer on November 28, 1963. After Jacks death, Eunice moved to Decorah and worked for Farm Bureau. She married Robert Denk on June 12, 1965 and together they had two children: Cindy and Jim. She then worked for JC Penney for twenty-eight years. Eunice was a member of St. Benedicts Catholic Parish and served on the St. Margaret Circle. She enjoyed gardening, playing golf, playing cards and entertaining. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren and hosted them at “Camp Grandma” for a week every summer.

Eunice is survived by her husband of 54 years: Bob Denk. Children: Randy (Cindy) Schissel, Decorah, IA; Cindy Maxa, Lakeville, MN and Jim (Kayla) Denk, Lakeville, MN. Grandchildren: MacKenzie and Collin Denk; Tyler (Cecily) Maxa, Kaitlin Maxa, Jennifer (Wade) Waddell, Samantha (Bobby) Friederick, John Schissel and Matt Schissel. Great-grandchildren: Maddison, Adam, Emery, Parker and Myla. Brother: Gordon (Peggy) Westby, Canyon Lake, CA. Sister: Audrey Barth, Decorah, IA. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Arlene Westby, Decorah, IA; Jackie Westby, Waukon, IA; Bill Radke, Wabasha, MN; Judy (Gary) Hovden, Ridgeway, IA; Don Denk, Waukon, IA and Rick Denk, Farwell, MN along with many nieces and nephews.

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents: Carl and Rachel (Nash) Westby. Brothers: Arden (Jerrie) Westby, Roger Westby, Lyle Westby and Kenneth (Ruth) Westby. Sisters: Ethel (Wes) Brandt and Barb Radke. Father and mother-in-law: Virgil and Gerry Denk. Sister-in-law: Gayla Denk. Brother-in-law: Dale Barth.
