An Old-Time Printer Gone.
A Sioux City telegram last Friday reported the death of Sam S. Haislet, once a well-known citizen of this city. This event occurred at Ord, Neb., resulting from paralysis at the age of 67. Sam was one of three brothers who learned tin art of printing in the office of the North Iowa Times, under Pat. Richardson. George, the elder, sleeps in Decorah cemetery after a career of many years as an editor in this city. Frank, after learning his trade, located in New Hampton, started the Tribune, and for many years was regarded as the editorial leader of that town. Sam came to Decorah, worked as a journey man printer and when the “Press” was started by a strong combination of capital and influence he became its publisher. The enterprise did not pay, and he drifted into employment on the REPUBLICAN, which he capably filled for many years. Few better journeymen ever served us. Later on he started the Calmar Guardian, which he moved to Heron Lake, and Adrian, Minn., where he scintillated for a score of years. For ten years we had not heard of him, until this telegram told the tale which must soon be repeated as to all who were associated with him from war times until the latter end of the seventies. One son followed in his footsteps and is editor of the Gazette at Red Lake Falls. We presume he died at the home of a daughter.
