A correct obituary of Mrs. Abigail Hawkes, who passed away on the 14th inst. could not be had at the time of her death, but we will now try to give it as nearly correct as possible. She was born in Beaver Village, Pike county, Ohio, Feb. 1, 1824. When about twenty years' of age she was married to David Jervis. Shortly afterward they moved to Pennsylvania, lived there two years, came hack to Ohio, and later moved to Iowa. Not being satisfied with the climate, they went to Missouri, where her husband died, leaving her with five small children to take care of at a time when the war was at its worst. She managed to get hack to Iowa in 1863, and with the exception of the last two years, she has lived in Canoe town¬ship, She has seen her share of sorrow and trouble, and not being very strong, she was not able to battle with the world as some might have done. Still she was always cheerful and patient. She was a member of the Advent church for years, and after age had dimmed her eyes, she would quote passages of Scripture that were precious to her. She was a good neighbor, a kind mother. She leaves three sons and two daughters beside many friends to mourn her loss. I should have mentioned sooner that she was married the second time to Isaac Hawkes who survives her. She was buried at Decorah. Many of her friends were sorely disappointed as it was understood she was to be interred at Burr Oak. She was eighty years old and had been able to care for herself until a short time before her death.
