On May 7, 2019, God spoke to Phoebe Catherine Ernzen. He said, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Be at rest, welcome home.”
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 14, at the funeral home. Private burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery.
Phoebe was born June 14, 1940 in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Bjarne and Nettie (Murdock) Kvam. She married Delbert Ernzen on September 3, 1960 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on February 4, 2010.
Phoebe worked in housekeeping at the Dodge House Motel, and at ARC as an Aide. For 10 years, she was a CNA at Bethany Home.
Phoebe was fiercely proud of her Norwegian heritage. She loved nature, and enjoyed taking walks and watching wildlife through her windows. Phoebe and Delbert loved all kinds of birds and flowers, but had a special place in their hearts for sunflowers and bald eagles. In her later years, Phoebe took great joy in sitting on the front porch and watching the children going home on the way past from school.
Phoebe is survived by her children, Peter (Kristine) Ernzen of Ida Grove, IA, Paul (Cindy) Ernzen of Dubuque, Dana (James) Frederick of Huntsville, AL, and Dawn Lesch of La Crescent, MN; eight grandchildren, Dr. Catherine Frederick of Bangor, ME, Jayson (Katie) Lesch of LaCrosse, WI, Noah Frederick of Huntsville, AL, Josh Ernzen of Humboldt, IA, Elizabeth Lesch of Madison, WI, Rachel Ernzen of Sioux City, IA, Benjamin Lesch of LaCrescent, MN, and Ian Ernzen of Dubuque; her great grandchildren, Isaac and Emma Ernzen, Aurora Lesch, and one on the way; her brother, Blair (Mary) Kvam of Dubuque; a sister in law, Janet (Corky) Vance of Dubuque, and a brother in law, Ronald (Eileen) Ernzen of Dowagiac, MI.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorials may be made to the Audubon Society, Hospice of Dubuque, or University of Iowa Health Care: givetoiowa.org.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque and Dubuque Oncology, Dr. David Bender at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, and an extra loving thank you to Tina Sheston and Carrie Peppemier for their care of Phoebe.
