Mildred V. Dinger, age 96, of Decorah, IA, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2019 at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah.

Mildred’s wish was to donate her body for educational and research purposes to the Deeded Body Program at the University of Iowa, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology.

Memorial Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2019 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Pastor Amy Larson officiating.

Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. Friday, one hour before the service, at the church.

Mildred Virginia (Nordheim) Dinger was born on March 23, 1923 in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Victor and Gyda (Brunsvold) Nordheim. Victor and Gyda had four children: Mildred, Curtis, Kermit, and Gerald. Mildred moved to Decorah from the farm near Sattre when she was thirteen to attend Decorah High School where she graduated in 1940. She married Richard Dinger, of Decorah, on July 18, 1941 at the Big Canoe Lutheran Church. They had two children, Karen (1945) and John (1947).

“Millie” worked as a country school teacher. She worked at Luther College: in the book store, the post office, and the gift shop. She was the teacher and director of Nisse Nursery School for ten years. Mildred was certified as a Montessori teacher. She tutored students and always placed a high value of instilling the importance of education to all the children she taught.

Mildred was a wonderful seamstress and kept taking on more and more complicated projects of tailoring. She was known to make alterations for friends, neighbors, and college students.

“Millie”, Richard, Karen, and John were charter members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She was active in the church groups, president of the congregation, and loved to go early for church so she could greet people as they arrived.

“Millie” and Richard were believers in the power of prayer. They were separated due to World War II and were so grateful to be back together after the war that their love for one another was an inspiration for many who knew them.

“Millie” and Richard volunteered at the Decorah Public Library; they attended many sports events at the High School, and cherished music on the lawn of the courthouse during the summer months.

The couple moved to Vennehjem fourteen years ago and then to Aase Haugen Home seven years ago.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Gyda Nordheim; her in-laws, Irvin and Helga Dinger; two brothers, Curtis and Gerald Nordheim; a sister in law, Ethel Stuckman; and a brother in law, Roger Dinger.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Dinger; her children, Karen Oiseth of Northfield, MN and John (Sunnye) Dinger of Odessa, TX; five grandchildren, Amy Grass, Jon and Nils Oiseth, Scott and Jeff Dinger; seven great grandchildren; her brother Kermit (Marilyn) Nordheim; and sister in law, Eileen Nordheim.
