GEORGE TREAT.
Word was received Sunday from Minot, N. D., of the death of George Treat, only son of Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Treat. Later particulars revealed the fact that he entered a hospital for an operation. Chloroform was administered and he died from the effects of the anaesthetic. George was born in Decorah forty-six years ago but for the past quarter century has lived in the west engaged in various pursuits. For years he lived at Great Falls, Mont, and at the time when bad men were trying to run the town he was chief of police and gave a good administration. It was while serving in this capacity he was shot by one of these men and nearly lost his life. A rugged constitution served him well and he recovered. When the Klondike was opened Mr. Treat went to Alaska and spent two years. A short residence at Great Falls followed, and for several years he has lived at Minot. Though quiet and unassuming in his manner, the deceased was warm hearted and genial, and enjoyed a wide circle of acquaintances who held him in high esteem. The remains were brought to Decorah to-day for interment.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone photo in Phelps Cemetery shows he was born in 1858.
