Mrs. Bertha Allen died at her home in Frankville township Dec. 8, 1905, after a week’s illness. Bertha Todd was born at Frankville, Iowa, Oct. 30, 1884, where she spent her girlhood days. She was united in marriage to Ernest L. Allen Dec. 10, 1900. As a result of this union two children, Lucile and Vern, were born, who with the husband, mother and father and brother survive her. The funeral occurred from the Centennial church, Sunday, Dec. 10, 1905, on the fifth anniversary of their marriage, Rev. Montgomery officiating. An unusually large concourse of people assembled to pay their last respects to one who was held n the highest esteem by all who knew her. She was a kind and loving wife and mother. The sorrowing husband and children surely have the heartfelt sympathies of their large circle of friends in the hour of their great sorrow.

The community was shocked and grieved when the news came of the death of Mrs. Bertha Allen after a week’s illness from blood poisoning. Bertha is the daughter of John Todd and was born in Frankville and lived here until her marriage with Ernest Allen, when their home has since been on his father’s farm near Ossian. We learn she was taken sick on the Saturday preceding her death and that from the first her recovery was doubtful. Her brother, Cecil, who is at Huntington, Iowa, was sent for and arrived at her bedside before she passed away. It is always sad when death enters a household and lays his hand on a loved one, especially one so young as Bertha, who was barely twenty-one, and separates her from a loving husband and two small children, who will miss a mother’s tender care. A father, mother and one brother are also left to cherish her memory, besides other relatives and a host of friends who mourn her untimely death. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Centennial church, Rev. Montgomery officiating, and she was laid at rest in the beautiful cemetery at the same place.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone in Centennial Cemetery shows her birth date as Oct. 29, 1884.
