Edward G. Marlow died last Thursday morning at ten o’clock at his home in this city and was buried on Saturday in the Canoe cemetery. Mr. Marlow was born June 1, 1820, in Knox county, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. In 1837 he came to Iowa and settled in Canoe township, which continued to be his home until five years ago, when he retired from active farm life and came to Decorah to reside. He was married in Ohio March 14, 1852, to Martha A. Clark. To them five children were born, two of whom, John S. and Chauncey, died in youth. There remain to survive him two daughters and one son,—Josephine, Elnora and Charley. Mrs. Marlow died in 1891. Previous to coining to Iowa Mr. Marlow lived for five years in Crawfordsville, Ohio, where he engaged in merchandising, farming, and buying and selling stock. Although he was a successful farmer he was more widely known after coming west as the owner of celebrated running horses. Two horses became particularly well known under his handling—Ole Johnson and Joe MacMahan, both winning many races for their owner
Mr. Marlow was a man of strong personality and while he made some enemies his friends were just as loyal and true in their devotion to him. Politically he was a democrat but never aspired to any honors although he enjoyed the esteem and confidence of his neighbors in so far that they entrusted him with local township matters and every trust that was placed in him was faithfully discharged.
No one feature marked the illness preceding Mr. Marlow’s death. Health gradually failed him and death was due to a general breakdown. During the past two years he got about but little,—his more frequent outings being on Sunday when he went to church if possible. Though not a communicant at any church he thoroughly enjoyed a good sermon and it was one of his pleasures to attend where he could hear a scholarly discourse.
