THE SILENT REAPER.
EUSEBIUS MATHER
Like one who wraps his mantel about him and lies down to pleasant dreams Squire Mather passed from this life into the longer life of eternity at his home on east Main street, Tuesday evening.
Eusebius Mather was born in Genessco. Livingston Co., New York, Nov 10, 1822, and was married to Miss Hannah W Deming at Norwalk, Ohio, Oct. 11, 1849. Before coming to Iowa he resided in Van Buren Co.. Mich., and Lake Co., Ill., coming from the latter county to Winneshiek county in 1865 and settling at Conover in the boom times of that town. Five years later he moved to Decorah where his home has since been. During these thirty-five years of residence here the deceased has walked among us, a man mild in speech, generous in his consideration of all about him, acting the part of the worthy citizen and kind husband and father, and at last settling in that serene and peaceful old age which is a fitting crown to a model daily life. His wife died thirty-three years ago, leaving him with two daughters to hold her memory sacred. These daughters, Mrs. B. J. Revnolds and Miss Amelia Mather and one sister residing at Spokane, Wash., survive him.
Mr. Mather was a member of all the Masonic bodies of Decorah—Commandery, Chapter, Blue Lodge and Eastern Star—and was honored almost continuously by official position in one or more of them. His devotion to his duties was sincere, and it was his wish that the Masonic ritual be used at his funeral. Accordingly the services which will be held to-morrow afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at the home will be conducted by his brother Masons, with Rev H. H. Green officiating.
