Elizabeth "Liz" R. Akre of Pewaukee died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital at age 71. Liz was born Jan. 12, 1936, in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Leonard and Vera Stortz.

Liz was a former member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Catholic Church in Decorah and St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Bella Vista, Ark. Liz and Ron are currently members of St. Anthony on the Lake Catholic Church in Pewaukee. She was a member of the Rosary Society. Liz devoted her life to her husband, eight children and 25 great-grandchildren. She was an outstanding cook and was blessed with many artistic talents, including quilting, knitting, rug hooking, rosemaling, basket weaving, loom weaving, painting, sewing and embroidery. She also had many other talents and shared them all in service to her family and community.

Liz married her husband, Ron, on Oct. 6, 1956, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon, Iowa.

She will be deeply missed by her husband, Ron, and their children, Mari Akre (Lein) of Minnetonka, Minn., Paul (Marie) of Delafield, James (Sheri) of Winona, Minn., David (Martha) of Elmhurst, Ill., Margaret (Noel) Monhardt of Monticello, Minn., Thomas (Mary) of Granger, Ind., Lynn (Chuck) Pierce of Alexandria, Va., and Greg (Ann) of Waukesha. She is further survived by 25 grandchildren, Dana, Ben, Paul J., Alex, Charlie, Melissa, Travis, Megan, Trenton, David, Elizabeth, Nathan, Hannah, Theresa, John, Michael, Austin, Gabriel, Julia, Elaina, Claire, Charlie, Logan, Ayla and Danika. Liz is the sister of Margaret Stortz, Francis (Katherine) Stortz, Patricia (Russ) Schirm and James (Shirley) Stortz, all of Iowa. She also is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. memorial Mass on Saturday, Oct. 20, at St. Anthony on the Lake Catholic Church, W280-N2101 Prospect Ave., Pewaukee. The Rev. Joseph Hornacek will officiate. Burial will take place at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Decorah.

In lieu of flowers, Masses said in Liz’s name are appreciated.
