A Good Man Taken
Death Claims John C. Todd, of Fremont Township,
HEART DISEASE DISCLOSED CAUSE
He Died While Attending His Stock and His Body not Found for Several Hours.
The startling news was received in Decorah early yesterday morning that John C. Todd, one of the bent known and most highly respected citizens of Orleans township, had died at his home Tuesday night under circumstances that made an official examination desirable.
Dr. P. M. Jewell, county coroner, deputised Justice R. F. Gibson to go to Orleans township as his representative, and Dr. Dana Jewell accompanied Mr. Gibeon to make the medical examination and act as clerk. Upon their arrival Messrs. Martin Ryan, James Lester and T. E. Wrenn were sworn in as jurors. The examination which followed disclosed the fact that Mr. Todd had left, the house at about seven o’clock to look after one of his hogs. When he did not return by eight o’clock some search was made for him but he was not found. His continued absence at ten o'clock caused alarm and the neighbors were aroused and a systematic search begun. They knew that he had gone to a strawstack near which the hogs were kept, but being unable to see anything of him there it was concluded that he had gone elsewhere. Between twelve and one o'clock his brother and sons, searching about the straw, saw his feet sticking out from under it. The others were notified and when Mr. Todd’s body was removed it was found that life had passed from it. The indications were that the animal he had gone to attend had burrowed under the straw for a place in which to deliver her young, and that Mr. Todd was attempting to rescue the pigs from possible suffocation when death came to him. '
Further questioning brought out the fact that Mr. Todd had once had some trouble with his heart, being overcome and on regaining consciousness finding himself lying on the ground; that about a year ago he had been examined for life insurance and been refused because his heart was affected; and that he had told one of his neighbors that his heart had troubled him.
With these facts before them the jury gave as their verdict that the deceased came to his death from heart disease.
The affliction that is thus brought upon the family is one in which they have the sympathy of all who knew Mr. Todd. He was a good citizen, a kind neighbor, a loving husband and father, and a man who at all times sought to do what he thought to be the right and honorable thing.
