Death. -
It becomes our duty to announce the
Death of WILLIAM DAY, Esq, in the 69th year of his age, original proprietor of the town of Decorah. Mr. Day was a native of Virginia, and removed to this State in 1850, ten years ago he established a claim to a half section, embracing the easterly portion of the town, (the line north and south, running near the house occupied by Mr. Howell,) and when the Land Office was opened here he secured a title to it. At the time of his first settlement, he had no neighbor nearer than four miles. But from the outset, judging by the advantages of the place, the water power, territorial location, etc., he foresaw that his “claim” was suited to the establishment of a smart town, and directed his energies accordingly. He encouraged settlers of different trades and callings by the liberal sale of lots, had a town plot judiciously laid out, and it is owing much to his energy, liberality and forethought, that Decorah is today a thriving county feat, rather than a mere farm-home for somebody and away from a settlement.
Mr. Day first built the log house still standing in his yard, and this house for some years was the only hotel in Decorah, but he has since erected the Winneshiek House, (his late home ) one of the most commodious hotel buildings In northern Iowa.
The deceased has been for years a severe sufferer from inflammatory rheumatism, but for some time past a complication of diseases has preyed upon him, and we learn that his physicians are in doubt of the immediate cause of his death
We had not the privilege of on intimate acquaintance with the deceased, but his neighbors unite in saying that he was an honest man, upright in his life, generous to objects of charity, and while laying the foundations of competency and wealth for himself and family, was still mindful of the wants of his fellows, and the general claims of mankind. Our citizens generally will drop a tear over the departed, and extend their sympathies to the large circle of friends who are more immediately affected by the mournful dispensation of Divine Providence.
